Float Times - Drift Boats

It's come to my attention that there is a serious lack of information for those of us looking to explore new rivers in our drift boats. Well I'm tired trusting the GPS, DNR, and Google earth to tell me where/when/how long a stretch of river is. There is nothing worse than 1.) getting caught in the dark without a clue as to where you are, or 2.) rushing through a float because you are afraid of getting caught in the dark.

Don't get me wrong... there wont be too much information given here..... but let's talk about float times and ramp conditions for our favorite rivers.

Northern Ohio Un-named

Fished a small un-named on Sunday afternoon. Lots of suckers coming on to the gravel and the entire river seemed to come alive overnight. Caught a few smallies on my favorite spring smallmouth streamer. I call it a Krystal Minnow but I'm sure, like most, it has 12 different names. I prefer to fish the white one.

One nice pre-spawn female with a softball for a belly, gently released to carry out her mission.
Water was a frightening 68 degrees. Way to early for this time of year. The upcoming cool nights should help. River has changed a lot after this years flood.

No fish in that river...

First report! Wooooohoooo!

Fished the V. It sucks. That poor river needs an enema in the worst way.
Flow in the mid 70's with WAY too much color for that flow. Saw two fish roll. Covered about 3/4 mile of stream swinging a streamer and got nothing, Bill was drifting nymphs, meth and whatever. Nothin. Left for Rocky at about 9:30 or 10.
Stopped at Abe's(?) for a Bloody Mary and some breakfast. Not bad but no Spikes.
Drove to the upstream most park access on the Rock. Started working our way downstream, me again with the streamers and Bill drifting stuff. Again, no fish short of a few chubs that Bill caught. A guide and two sports file in behind Bill in the run that he was going to cover again. Bill hears the guide say "can you cast?" Both sports say "not really" and one proceeds to hook a steelie. Go figure.
At that point we walk up over the bridge, spot some fish, mark the type of water they were holding in and take a walk. We eventually found our own little private pod of fish and fished them in solitude for the rest of the afternoon.
I'd post pics but I don't know how.
Almost forgot, Bill and I caught the same fish 3 times.

I got the full pelts I had mentioned, at least some of them. I need to go through the bag when I get home. Its all tanned too.

Here's the list so far:

Black bear, about half a bear (I think) from the ass end. Pretty thick but some nice long hairs. Might be great for spinning and tying heads.
Red fox, full pelt. Really soft and waiting to be zonked, dyed, etc.
Mink, full pelt.
Assortment of deer fur from early to late season stuff.
Might be some bobcat and coyote too.

Lets do some experiments with dyes and come up with some new patterns with this stuff.

Adopt a Beat Sign Up

ASBWPA ADOPT A BEAT PROGRAM
See: http://www.adopt-a-beat.org/ for info

The Au Sable Big Water Preservation Association, http://www.asbwpa.org/, appreciates and understands that not everyone is able to make an every two week promise (like the rest of the lucky trout bums in the world) to cover every beat in this program. If we lived in a perfect world where we all get to fish for trophy trout on a daily basis it would be different but since we understand the hazards of day to day life get in the way of this we would like to offer anyone the opportunity to participate in the Adopt a Beat program via this forum. All we ask is this:

Sign up on the Hatchless Forum to post here and register for an uncovered beat in this thread.

Uncovered beats can be found here: http://www.adopt-a-beat.org/

A complete list of beats in need of coverage will be posted on this forum soon and updated pretty regularly so that they can be tracked easily and covered by those that wish to participate on a per trip basis. If you would like to cover a beat, please do so by posting here. In the end, we all get a cleaner river to fish and the fish gods will reward you for doing a good deed.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Mad River

Took a trip to Bellefontaine this weekend to spend a weekend at the Briarwood Sporting Club and fish the Mad River a little. We found out shortly after our arrival that we were allowed to fish the lake in front of our lodge but not the trout ponds on the property. It was a big plus b/c there are two jon boats to use and we had enough fishermen to fill them. Two of which were noobs (Kyle and Olivier) so having them in the boat prooved to be better for teaching since they both caught their first fly rod fish. I was lucky enough to be the guy with each of them when it happened. I'm sure there are lots of things better than getting to share that moment with someone but I can't think of what they are right now so I guess it doesn't matter.
Kwakrz, Paulus, and I fished Friday at the lodge and hammered the bluegill and bass on the Kwakrz dubbed John Mcain fly (white bugger). The gills were of size to be worthy of the frying pan. If we would've had a fillet knife they would've made a nice addition to dinner. The bass were still pretty lethargic from the cold water but big enough to wish the water had been a few degrees warmer. I think the biggest bass was about 14" and caught by Olivier, his first.
We fished the Mad Saturday afternoon for a bit. Small water and clear but a nice mix of water types with some spots that would hold some good sized fish. Paulus got one on a nymph and then rose a 10" fish to a hennie but got refused. Kwak got some strikes on a John Mcain and another strike on an Iso posing to be a hennie but no hook ups. I'm pretty sure that the day will come when the only flies Kwakrz carries will be Iso's and John Mcains. I got 3 on a hennie parachute emerger but I'm certain that even the smallest bass we caught could have easily eaten the biggest trout I caught. Keep in mind that the biggest bass we caught was 14" and do the math from there. The noobs struck out on the Mad. I would fish that river again but I think its more of a "go fish the hatch" river than it is a "go chuck streamers" river. At least where we were. I will say that it was fun to watch my fly get eaten regardless of the size of the trout. We sat on a high bank on watched a trout feed for a few minutes which was also pretty cool.
We went back and fished the lodge lake for the rest of the afternoon and got a few but the bite was not nearly as good as it was Friday but that was when both noobs got fish so it was worth it.
